Scientific Communication Project
Background: Scientific communication is an important aspect of the scientific process. The objective of scientific communication is to accurately and clearly communicate scientific knowledge; hence it is intimately linked with the scientific method. There are a variety of ways to disseminate scientific information via written, oral, or visual means, including papers, reports, presentations, infographics, and posters. Different communication modes achieve different objectives, and through this project we will begin to understand key steps and ingredients for effective scientific communication. Professional success in any future workplace relies on communication skills (making effective presentations, writing proposals, compiling reports, etc.), so mastering scientific communication and acquiring these skills is valuable even outside of scientific disciplines.
Assignment: Using scientific literature, students will summarize the current knowledge of the topic of their choice through written and visual communication media. The written aspect of this project is a short paper that gives an overview of the chosen topic. The visual assignment is an education-style poster, and is a chance for students to relay the information presented in the paper while expressing their creativity through images and design.
